There’s nothing here to make me run out and recommend The Gifted to everyone I know, but I have certainly seen worse superhero premieres, and compared to last week’s Inhumans debut, this looks downright brilliant. I don’t know much about the rest of the cast, but Sean Tale definitely reminds me of Oscar Isaac, and despite playing a wholly original character he has to invent from scratch, he seems like a strong part of the cast. Amy Acker is amazing in everything and True Blood’s Stephen Moyer does a great job here too. I thought that Natalie Alyn Lind would be a star after seeing her brief arc on Gotham. Again, I never like to judge a show by one episode alone, and this is something that can hopefully develop more on its own over time. Not that it has to be either of those things, but it’s weird to have sort of a non-vibe in an era when shows like Gotham, Legion and the Arrowverse all have their own distinct “feel” to them. It’s not funny, as I don’t think there’s more than one actual joke in the entire pilot. What I find The Gifted lacks is a sort of style to call its own. The special effects are surprisingly great for a small-scale show like this, and it’s steering clear of too many Heroes vibes even when the show has been immediately compared to the former NBC hit since it was announced. It’s well-paced, the characters are interesting and not irritating ( as Inhumans demonstrates, that’s far from a sure thing). I’ve been skeptical of most network programming the past few years, but FOX has done great work with Gotham, and while I find The Gifted’s pilot to be a bit less engaging than other superhero shows, I think it still works and is a relatively solid debut. How the show fits into the lore of the X-Men universe or the MCU is something that is probably not going to be answered any time soon, if ever, and more important is if The Gifted works as a show. But still, if there’s no connection, why choose that name? There were two Strucker twins that could fly and shoot plasma that could be these Struckers, but their powers don’t match and I don’t see HYDRA being a part of this show at all. The von Struckers were a fixture in HYDRA, but that’s the MCU and far, far away from FOX’s X-Men. The Strucker kids are a mix of comic and non-comic lore. The Gifted returns on Fox, September 25, 2018.The Gifted toys with using existing C-list X-Men like Thunderbird and Polaris (who is almost certainly Magnento’s long lost daughter), as well as inventing their own like Eclipse, a character with light-based power who can do anything from use his hand as a flashlight to melt metal with bright lasers. Through sheer performance and letting go of continuity to tell a unique story, the show definitely earned a season 2. A show about one of the most beloved universes of characters resting on the shoulders of a B-player roster. The Gifted was definitely a welcome surprise to fans. To Sean Teale, this year is where we get to have fun making the show and have fun talking about it.” Their return is being enjoyed with more smiles among the group. In the show’s first appearance at Comic-Con, the cast was a nervous wreck showing off a property no one has seen with a distinct history in pop culture. We also come to find that the power of the twins may not be gone as Natalie talked about her character finding a new way to channel that destructive power seen when Lauren and her brother hold hands.ĭumont became the face of The Gifted’s presence at SDCC this year as her poster adorns a few dozen levels of the outside of the Omni tower across the street from the convention center. According to the actors, the Strucker family is splintered and much of their season focuses on dealing with loss and finding a way to go on. Stephen Moyer (Reed) and Natalie Alyn Lind ( daughter Lauren) characters are dealing with a family crisis from the death of youngest son Andy Strucker. Perhaps the most interesting thing about the upcoming sophomore season of The Gifted is the fallout of the Strucker family tragedy. Teale and Dumont couldn’t elaborate on how much screen time they share thus far in filming season 2 but assure fans their characters will have many heated moments even if by proxy. Redford and Sean Teale explained in the show’s timeline, season 2 will start six months after the events of the season 1 finale as the threats of Sentinel Services and the emerging purifiers group will have grown to be more deadly. Season 2 will focus on the cracks in the leadership foundation of Proudstar, Marcos, and Polaris. Blair Redford (Proudstar) and Sean Teale (Eclipse) touched on the emerging conflict between their characters.
